If there is one book in English you want to read for this year then “Remains of the day” by kazuo Ishiguro must be it. This is a masterclass in restrained writing where power of unsaid is more powerful than what is actually said or expressed.
The film espouses values like dignity, professionalism, etiquette, restraint, emotional control, service, introspection, care, missed opportunities, love as an undercurrent, regret vs virtue, making amends with life ultimately.
It’s slow, controlled, consistent narration from a dignified English butler Stevens who served Lord Darlington in his mansion during the first and Second World War overlooking high profile visits from who’s who of Britain, America, France and German nazis ….an interesting but matured love story which brews along is as good as it can get !
