The last sanctuary in Aleppo

This is the story of an electrician in Aleppo Syria who also accidentally happens to be an ambulance driver due to necessity of the war in Syria 🇸🇾. With Russian bombers constantly creating the havoc in the historical city of Aleppo which is also a strategic foothold from east to west. The Assad regimes use of chemical weapons on its own people ( chlorine and phosphorus bombs) is the lowest any regime can stoop on its own subjects.

Even in such a condition Ali volunteers for the ambulance job working with few NGO s rescuing people. In this quest he losses a lot of people close to him and carries them in his own ambulance 🚑. His wife leaves him taking their children at the peak of the war seeking asylum in turkey, Ali doesn’t join her despite her weeping requests.

This is a story about Ali who in the midst of war outside and inside plans with to open a sanctuary for cats 🐈, dogs with his own money. Eventually with the help of various Facebook and instagram friends from the west he maintains it despite all obstacles taking care of hundreds of cats and at one point due to bombing half of them get killed!

He manages to feed 2000 people for 2 years with external funding and support despite roadblocks, bombings and hostile government. It is a story of one man’s resilience, goodness of heart, purity of character and a relentless effort to save Muslims, Christians, Jews without any prejudice and false notions of pride.

ಮೊನ್ನೆ ಫೇಸ್ಬುಕ್ನ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಒಂದು ಸಾಹಿತಿಕ ವಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನೈಜೀರಿಯಾದ ಇಬ್ಬರು ದಿಗ್ಗಜ ಬರಹಗಾರರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರು ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ? ಚೀನುವ ಆಚಿಬೆಯೋ ಅಥವಾ ವೋಲೆ ಸೋಯಿಂಕಾನೋ ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚರ್ಚೆ ನಡೆದಿತ್ತು. ಚೀನುವಾ ಅಚಿಬೆ ಕವಿ, ಕಥೆಗಾರ, ಕಾದಂಬರಿಕಾರನಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರೆ ವೋಲೆ ಸೋಯಾಂಕಾನ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ನಾಟಕಗಳು …he is a playwright ! ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದಿಂದ ಹೊರಗಿರುವ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಜನರಿಗೆ ಅಚಿಬೆಯ things fall apart, the arrow of god , man of the people (African trilogy) ನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗೊತ್ತಿರುವುದೇ ಹೊರತು ವೋಲೆ ಸೋಯಂಕಾನ ನಾಟಕಗಳು ಅಷ್ಟು ತಿಳಿಯವು. ಅಷ್ಟೇಕೆ ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾದ ಒಳಗೇ ಅಚಿಬೆಯೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರ ವಾದ. ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬರು ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರ ವಿಚಾರಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾ ಅಚಿಬೆ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯಶಾಹಿಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ , ವಸಾಹತುಶಾಹಿಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ, ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿನ ಅಮಾಯಕತೆಯ, ಅವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಬಹು ನಿಷ್ಠುರವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದರೆ ಸೋಯಂಕಾನ ಬರಹಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಡನಂಬಿಕೆ, ಕಂದಾಚಾರ, ಶೋಷಣೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚೆಚ್ಚು ಬೆಳಕುಚೆಲ್ಲಲಾಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯಶಾಹಿಯ ಅಟ್ಟಹಾಸ, ಮನುಷ್ಯರನ್ನು ಮೃಗಗಳಂತೆ, ಜೀತದಾಳುಗಳಂತೆ ನೋಡಿದ, ಸಂಪತ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ದೋಚಿದ ವಸಾಹತುಶಾಹಿ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮೃದು ಧೋರಣೆಯಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದು. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಯಿಸಿದ ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬರು ಈ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದಲೇ ಅಚಿಬೇಗೆ ನೊಬೆಲ್ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತ...

ನಾನು ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ ಅಪ್ಪನ ಜೊತೆ ಬಾಬಾ ಬುಡನ್ಗಿರಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಪರ್ವತಗಿರಿ ಶ್ರೇಣಿ , ಮಂಜು ಮೋಡ, ತಣ್ಣನೆಯ ಅನಾಮಿಕತೆ, ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿಥಿಲಗೊಂಡು ಬಿದ್ದಿದ್ದ ಶೆಡ್ ಮನೆಗಳು, ಮುರಿದಿದ್ದ ಕೈಮರ, ಐದು ಮೀಟರ್ ಮುಂದೆ ಬಿಲ್ಕುಲ್ ಕಾಣದ ಹಾದಿ, ಮುಂಜಾವಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಕವಿದಿದ್ದ ಮಬ್ಬುಗತ್ತ್ಲು, ಕೊರೆವ ಮುತ್ತಿನಂತೆ ಉದುರುವ ಮಾಣಿಕ್ಯಧಾರಾ ಜಲಪಾತ, ಜಾರುನೆಲದ ಮೇಲೆ ಜೀವ ಬಾಯಿಗೆ ಬಂದಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸ್ನಾನ, ದತ್ತರ ಗುಹೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆಂದು ಗುಮಾನಿಯಿರುವ ಹುಲಿ, ಜೈಲಿನಂತ ಗುಹೆಯ ಹೊರಗಡೆಯ ಬಾಬಾ ಸಾಬರ ಗೋರಿಗಳು, ಅಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಮುಲ್ಲಾ ಒಬ್ಬರು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಅದೆಂತದೋ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಬೀಜದ ಕಾಯಿಗಳು …ನನ್ನ ಸ್ಮೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಇದೆ. ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಇದೇ ದತ್ತ ಪೀಠದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಾಗ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಜಟಾಪಟಿ, ದತ್ತಮಾಲಾ ಅಭಿಯಾನ, ಹಿಂದೂ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಪ್ರಕ್ಷುಬ್ಧ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ, ಪ್ರಗತಿಪರರೂ ಸಂಘದವರಿಗೂ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಮಾತಿನ, ತೋಳ್ಬಲದ ಗುದ್ದಾಟ, ತಲೆಕೆಡಿಸಿ ಕೂರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾಡಳಿತ, ಅದನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತ ಅವರಿವರನ್ನ ಸಂದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಮೀಡಿಯಾ, ಒಬ್ಬೊಬ್ಬರ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ, ಹುನ್ನಾರವೇನು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾರದ ವಯಸ್ಸು , ಆಮೇಲಾಮೇಲೆ ತಿಳಿದ ಒಂದೊಂದೇ ವಿಷಯಗಳು, ತಿಳಿಯದೇ ಉಳಿದುಹೋದ ನೂರಾರು ಮಜಲುಗಳು ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಮಹೇಂದ್ರ ಕುಮಾರರು ಬರೆದು, ನವೀನ್ ಸೂರಿಂಜೆಯವರು ಮೂಲ ಆಶಯಕ್ಕೆ ಚ್ಯುತಿ ಬಾರದ...

The promise of a pencil

This is the story of a financial analyst in upstate New York who despite being in a high profile job of 6 digit salary and plum perks wanted to do something to change the world. This led him to various voyages (literally and otherwise) across the world finally deciding to start a school in Laos followed by many there and in Africa, Latin America and now 500 schools to his and his teams credit. All started with asking a child in India during his trip “ what is that one thing you want most in the world ?” And that child telling him “ A Pencil ! “ which started a revolution called “ Pencils of Promise “ One must read this book - no matter their age, affiliation, country or beliefs if they believe education can bring the necessary change in the world!
