ಒಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ದಿಗ್ಬ್ರಮೆ ಗೊಳಿಸಿದರೆ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಒಂದಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಹುಡುಕುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ !

“ The old man and the sea “ by Ernest Hemingway is one of the classics of modern time. Written in a simple and experimental narrative, this novel is a testimony for human endurance, battle over age, animal instinct, mutual respect, never say die attitude, compassion, survival of the fittest etc. between the old man, the sea and the giant fish who is his     ‘ catch’. It’s also a story of compassion, companionship, tools and tackles, training the next sailor, dreams, achievements, being proud , when it comes to the relationship between the old man and his young companion It’s a sort of, attaining nirvana by perfection, mastering technique and mental toughness over a lifetime by constantly pushing ones own limits in every expedition the man takes to the sea ...this is a metaphor here. This novel is about modesty of a woman,  which her brothers try to uphold ! Written by one of the most celebrated, respected and followed authors of our times. Gabriel garcia Marquez” reveals in the beginning itself, what is the plot but , goes on to make the read much more interesting. That’s his strength!  This is a tragedy of Misconception , misinterpretation and escapism , in the name of upholding the respect of a woman by vicario brothers ( for their sister in this novella ).  Any piece of literature is best told and read in one’s language , but, reading this in English instead of Spanish is nothing short of celebration!

I read these books ( both in Kannada and English) recently and here is my take on it. It seems like Prof UR Ananthmurthy was restless while writing this book and he indicates this indirectly in the preface by saying I might not have much time as I am writing this towards the fag end of my life but feel compelled to do so. When he said he doesn’t want to live in a country where Mr Modi is prime minister he was bashed by one and all especially the right wing which he clarifie s as a statement of “ symbolism “ and says that he continues to live and oppose the PM, since it is his fundamental right. In the most part of this book Prof UR Ananthamurthy argues how Gandhiji s “ Hind Swaraj “ is more inclusive than Veer Savarkar s “ Hindutva “ which he considers as skewed with incomplete understanding of Hinduism. ಬರ ಎಂದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಇಷ್ಟ ( Everybody loves a good drought by P Sainath ) ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನ G N Mohan ರವರು ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ತಂದಾಗ ಅದರ ಪ್ರತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮುಂಗಡ ಕೊಳ್ಳು ವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಕಾಶ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿದ್ದರು.  ನಾನು P Sainath ರವರ ಪರಮಾಭಿಮಾನಿ ! ದುಂಬಾಲು ಬಿದ್ದು ಲಿಂಕನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿದೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದ ಹೆಸರು ವಿಳಾಸ ತುಂಬಿದೆ. ಹಣ ಸಂದಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಅವಕಾಶವಿರದ ಕಾರಣ ಬಹುಷಃ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಸುಮ್ಮನಾದೆ. ಮೂರ್ನಾಲ್ಕು ದಿನಕಳೆದ ನಂತರ ಒಂದು ಪಾರ್ ಸಲ್ ಬಂತು ತೆರೆದು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬಂದಿದೆ !!! ಕಾಸೇ ಕೊಡದೆ 350 ರೂಪಾಯಿಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕವೇ ??? ಪುಟ ತಿರುವಿದಾಗ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಲಗತ್ತಿಸಿರುವ ಚೀಟಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು ! ಅಭಿನವ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ ಮತ್ತು ಜಿ ಏನ್ ಮೋಹನ್ ಗೊತ್ತೇ ಇರದ ನನ್ನಂತಹ ಓದುಗನನ್ನ ನಂಬಿದ್ದು ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ ತರಿಸಿತು .....ನಂತರ ಹಣ ಸಂದಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದೆ ! ಅಡ್ವಾನ್ಸ್ ಬುಕಿಂಗ್ನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಅವಿಸ್ಮರಣೀಯ  😊

ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ನಾನು ಒಂದೇ ಗುಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದೆ.  ಜೋಗಿಯವರ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಇದ್ದರೂ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪಾರ್ವತಮ್ಮನವರ ಮಾತುಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಭಾಗಷಃ ಬಂದಿರುವುದು ಜೋಗಿಯವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಹೊಳೆವ ಸಂಗತಿ. ಇದು ಬೇಕಾಗಿತ್ತೂ ಕೂಡ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿತು.  ನಮಗೆಲ್ಲಾ ಡಾ.ರಾಜ್ ರ ಧೈತ್ಯ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಪಾರ್ವತಮ್ಮನೆಂಬ ಗಟ್ಟಿಗಿತ್ತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು.  ಆದರೆ ಅವರ ತಿಳಿಹಾಸ್ಯದ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾ ? ಅವರ ನೇರವಂತಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಿಷ್ಟೂರತೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾ ?  ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಅವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ  ಗೊತ್ತು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ ! ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಅವರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಒಲವಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಅವರಿಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟವಾದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ, ಅಥವಾ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡಲು ಅವರು ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಿ ಕೈಸುಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡ ಲೇಖಕರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಅವರ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದು ಜಾಂಡಾ ಹೂರಿ, ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳ ಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ಕಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಚೌರಿಕನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ , ಡಾ. ರಾಜ್ ಅವರ ಮಾಂಸ ಪ್ರಿಯತೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಅವರು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದ ಅಸಂಖ್ಯ ಕಲಾವಿದರು, ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞರು ಮತ್ತು ಮನೆಕೆಲಸದ ಹುಡುಗರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ..... ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗ ನಡೆದುಬಂದ ಅಖಂಡ ೬೦ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪಾರ್ವತಮ್ಮನವರಿಗಿದ್ದ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಜಾಣ್ಮೆಯಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ " ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಸಂಗೀತ ಇರುವಾಗ ಬೇಕಾದರೆ long shot ಹಾಕಿ , ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಬಂದಾಗ close -up ಇರಲಿ , ಆಗಲೇ ಭಾವನೆಗಳು...
