I read these books ( both in Kannada and English) recently and here is my take on it. It seems like Prof UR Ananthmurthy was restless while writing this book and he indicates this indirectly in the preface by saying I might not have much time as I am writing this towards the fag end of my life but feel compelled to do so. When he said he doesn’t want to live in a country where Mr Modi is prime minister he was bashed by one and all especially the right wing which he clarifie s as a statement of “ symbolism “ and says that he continues to live and oppose the PM, since it is his fundamental right. In the most part of this book Prof UR Ananthamurthy argues how Gandhiji s “ Hind Swaraj “ is more inclusive than Veer Savarkar s “ Hindutva “ which he considers as skewed with incomplete understanding of Hinduism. ಬರ ಎಂದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಇಷ್ಟ ( Everybody loves a good drought by P Sainath ) ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನ G N Mohan ರವರು ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ತಂದಾಗ ಅದರ ಪ್ರತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮುಂಗಡ ಕೊಳ್ಳು ವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಕಾಶ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿದ್ದರು.  ನಾನು P Sainath ರವರ ಪರಮಾಭಿಮಾನಿ ! ದುಂಬಾಲು ಬಿದ್ದು ಲಿಂಕನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿದೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದ ಹೆಸರು ವಿಳಾಸ ತುಂಬಿದೆ. ಹಣ ಸಂದಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಅವಕಾಶವಿರದ ಕಾರಣ ಬಹುಷಃ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಸುಮ್ಮನಾದೆ. ಮೂರ್ನಾಲ್ಕು ದಿನಕಳೆದ ನಂತರ ಒಂದು ಪಾರ್ ಸಲ್ ಬಂತು ತೆರೆದು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬಂದಿದೆ !!! ಕಾಸೇ ಕೊಡದೆ 350 ರೂಪಾಯಿಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕವೇ ??? ಪುಟ ತಿರುವಿದಾಗ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಲಗತ್ತಿಸಿರುವ ಚೀಟಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು ! ಅಭಿನವ ಪ್ರಕಾಶನ ಮತ್ತು ಜಿ ಏನ್ ಮೋಹನ್ ಗೊತ್ತೇ ಇರದ ನನ್ನಂತಹ ಓದುಗನನ್ನ ನಂಬಿದ್ದು ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ ತರಿಸಿತು .....ನಂತರ ಹಣ ಸಂದಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದೆ ! ಅಡ್ವಾನ್ಸ್ ಬುಕಿಂಗ್ನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಅವಿಸ್ಮರಣೀಯ  😊

ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ನಾನು ಒಂದೇ ಗುಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದೆ.  ಜೋಗಿಯವರ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಇದ್ದರೂ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪಾರ್ವತಮ್ಮನವರ ಮಾತುಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಭಾಗಷಃ ಬಂದಿರುವುದು ಜೋಗಿಯವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಹೊಳೆವ ಸಂಗತಿ. ಇದು ಬೇಕಾಗಿತ್ತೂ ಕೂಡ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿತು.  ನಮಗೆಲ್ಲಾ ಡಾ.ರಾಜ್ ರ ಧೈತ್ಯ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಪಾರ್ವತಮ್ಮನೆಂಬ ಗಟ್ಟಿಗಿತ್ತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು.  ಆದರೆ ಅವರ ತಿಳಿಹಾಸ್ಯದ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾ ? ಅವರ ನೇರವಂತಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಿಷ್ಟೂರತೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾ ?  ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಅವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ  ಗೊತ್ತು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ ! ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಅವರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಒಲವಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಅವರಿಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟವಾದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ, ಅಥವಾ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಮಾಡಲು ಅವರು ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಿ ಕೈಸುಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡ ಲೇಖಕರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಅವರ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದು ಜಾಂಡಾ ಹೂರಿ, ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳ ಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ಕಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಚೌರಿಕನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ , ಡಾ. ರಾಜ್ ಅವರ ಮಾಂಸ ಪ್ರಿಯತೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಅವರು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದ ಅಸಂಖ್ಯ ಕಲಾವಿದರು, ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞರು ಮತ್ತು ಮನೆಕೆಲಸದ ಹುಡುಗರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ..... ಒಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗ ನಡೆದುಬಂದ ಅಖಂಡ ೬೦ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಮ್ಮದೇ ಆದ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪಾರ್ವತಮ್ಮನವರಿಗಿದ್ದ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಜಾಣ್ಮೆಯಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ " ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಸಂಗೀತ ಇರುವಾಗ ಬೇಕಾದರೆ long shot ಹಾಕಿ , ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಬಂದಾಗ close -up ಇರಲಿ , ಆಗಲೇ ಭಾವನೆಗಳು...

This book like many others from Sudha murthy explores middle class values, on the go realisations, her experiences from philanthropy, travels to Pakistan and Tibet, sophisticated friends and more importantly Self reliant and mesmerising poor with their enduring richness of life.....In short a good travel time read !

“ A life in science “ by professor CNR Rao is a beacon for young scientists , engineers and anyone who wants to pursue the indomitable sprit in them.   The reader would be astonished to know that there isn’t a single prominent institute with which Mr .Rao is not associated or worked with worldwide !   Many accomplished scientists of our country M M Sharma , V K Aatre, Roddam Narasimha , R A Mashal kar , U R Rao considers him as guru of gurus.   In this book Prof Rao shares the hurdles he faced doing science in a country which had least infrastructure post independence and yet became self reliant in many spheres , no doubt he demands for more allocation of funds for basic research, more industry support to research etc.   Though professor had offers to stay and continue his research in University of California, Berkeley, MIT , Oxford, Cambridge etc he choose to come to India   🇮🇳   and work for a meagre salary those days in places wher...

ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ತಂದಿಟ್ಟ ಐಸ್ ಕ್ರೀಮ್ನ ನಾವೇ ತಿಂದು ಬಿಡ್ತೀವಿ .....ತಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗದೇ !  ನಾನು “ ಮುಲ್ಲಾ ನಸೀರುದ್ದೀನ್ “ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನ ಓದಿದ್ದು ಹಾಗೇನೇ.  ಎಲ್ಲವರ್ಗದವರಿಗೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಏನೋ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ....ನಮ್ಮೊಳಗೇ ಒಬ್ಬ ನಸೀರುದ್ದೀನ್ ಇರುತ್ತಾನೆ ಅವನು ಉಡಾಫೆ, ಹಾಸ್ಯ, ಸೋಂಬೇರಿತನ, ಆದ್ಯಾತ್ಮ ಮತ್ತು ಅದೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಮೀರಿ ಮತ್ತೇನೋ ಆಗುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ ! ಅವನ ಕೆಲವು ಉತ್ತರಗಳು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯನ್ನ ಅಣಕಿಸುವಂತೆ ಇದ್ದರೆ, ಮತ್ತೊಂದಷ್ಟು ಅವನನ್ನೇ ಅಣಕಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಂತೆ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಉತ್ತರಗಳು ಎಷ್ಟು ಲೌಕಿಕವೋ ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೆಲವು ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲೌಕಿಕ ....ಕೆಲವು ಪೂರ್ಣ ಅನಿಸಿದರೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೆಲವನ್ನು ನಾವೇ ತುಂಬಿಕೊಳ್ಳ ಬೇಕು ! ಸೂರಿಯವರ “ ದಿ ಇನ್ಕ್ರೆಡಿಬಲ್ ಮುಲ್ಲಾ ನಸೀರುದ್ದೀನ್” ನಾಟಕವನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳೊಡನೆ ನೋಡಿದ ನನಗೆ ಜೋಗಿಯವರ “ ಒಂದಾನೊಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ....ರೀಟೆಲ್ಲಿಂಗ್ ಮುಲ್ಲಾ ನಸೀರುದ್ದೀನ್ “ ತುಂಬಾ ಖುಷಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ....ಲ್ಯಾಬ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಂತು ಒಂದೆರಡು ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದೆ ...ಕೆಲಸದ ಮಧ್ಯೆ !

“ Enigmas of Karnataka “ by S Shyamprasad ...... I picked this book to read after seeing FB suggestions. More than that, the subject on our state written in english attracted me more !  If one writes in English on a subject like history, can’t get away without proper references and this book has done it very well. Written in a lucid yet academic style this book unravels a lot of myths or ENIGMAS around hoysala s emblem , vijaynagar empire, the Bahubali statue of sharavanabelagola, kadale kaayi Parishe, Wodeyar’s ancestry, Jakaanachari’s existence and the origin of the name Bengaluru. It is for the readers to draw conclusions out of the arguments and evidences presented by the writer here rather than forcing his view. This I believe is a pre requisite of any good work. The topics chosen here are very interesting and a common reader like me dint even know that there existed such an ENIGMA upfront, except for how Bangalore got it’s name and different theories around this !
